Paragliding in La Clusaz: Why winter is the best season to fly (and how it works on skis!)
Are you in La Clusaz for the winter holidays or planning your stay for early 2026? While skiing is the main activity in the Aravis, there is another way to enjoy the snow, much quieter and more spectacular: winter paragliding.
At Ailes des Aravis, we are often asked: "Is it harder to fly in winter?" The answer will surprise you: it is often easier (and gentler) than in summer! Here’s everything you need to know for your first flight this season.
Taking off on skis: easier than on foot!
This is the main concern of our passengers: "Do I need to be a skiing champion to take off?" Absolutely not. If you can stand on your skis and glide straight down a green slope, you have the required level.
Unlike in summer where you have to run to inflate the wing, winter benefits from gliding.
-
We prepare on a gentle slope.
-
You glide a few meters effortlessly.
-
The wing takes over, and your skis leave the ground gently.
It’s a magical feeling: transitioning from gliding to flying without any jolt.
A unique view of the Aravis Range
Flying in winter in La Clusaz means rediscovering the resort from a new angle. From the air, the village looks like a model, and the snow-capped peaks of the Aravis (Pointe Percée, Mont Blanc in the background) provide a striking contrast with the blue sky.
The cold winter air is also denser and more stable (we call it oil!). This ensures very calm flights, perfect for:
-
Children (from 5-6 years old).
-
People prone to motion sickness (it moves much less than in summer!).
-
Those who want to take photos or videos while flying.
Why choose Ailes des Aravis?
With over 150 positive reviews on Google, our school is a historical reference in La Clusaz. We are not here to do "mass flying," but to share our passion.
Our instructors are locals who know the valley's aerology by heart. In winter 2025, we renewed part of our equipment to offer you even more comfort and safety.
Practical Information: Preparing for your flight
-
Meeting place: Usually at the top of the ski lifts (we will specify the exact location, often near Crêt du Loup or Beauregard, when you book).
-
Attire: Dress as if you were skiing! A suit, warm gloves, and a mask are mandatory. The relative wind can be chilly, so you need to be well covered.
-
Skis: Come with your alpine skis. Snowboarding is possible but requires a bit more technique for takeoff (let us know in advance!).
-
Video: Want to keep a memory? Request the video option to take home the film of your achievement.
Book your slot for the 2026 season
Weather conditions in the mountains change quickly. Our advice? Book your flight at the beginning of your stay. If the weather is unpredictable on Monday, we can postpone to Tuesday or Wednesday. If you wait until the last day, you risk missing the perfect slot.
